In Egyptian philosophy, there's a theory, you have no free will until you first recognize you are a byproduct of the past with the current environment influencing your predispositions, creating who you think you are today.
Nurture chooses what is expressed from nature and what’s most readily expressed is what’s been most nurtured.
Essentially free will is derived through conscious living and this can happen with the recognition of what was once unconscious. In the Yogic philosophy this is known as Sakshi, the witness at the center.
You know that pull you feel from who your being and who you see yourself as wanting to be? Thats consciousness trying to wake you.
In active participation with how you nurture yourself through the environments you're in, the thoughts you think, and how you care for your being you gain access to more of what you actually want out of life.
In science this process is known best as epigenetics and neuroplasticity.
Now not allowing yourself to be more than what you’ve known and experienced limits you from all that’s available in life. Many schools of thought, from TCM to Egyptian alchemy, The Vedas, and more, have mapped out the energetic body and through this, the developmental process of consciousness.
